Pick the Right Options For Your Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage plans can provide you with great health insurance coverage, courtesy of government assistance. Choosing the right options is integral, and here's how to do it.

Having insurance that you can really count on is a necessity for everyone, but especially those in need.  Whether you’re a pregnant mother to be, a senior citizen, a minor or even someone with a  disability, Medicare is out there to help you.  But there are different tiers as well as types of plans, so it’s important that you know what you’re getting into beforehand, so that you can find the right sort of arrangement.  With the right type of Medicare Advantage plans for example, you can be sure that you have all the coverage you need.  But there are so many options, that’s not always as easy as it sounds.

Navigating the world of insurance is really hard, especially if you’ve never really purchased it for yourself before, outside of employer involvement.  There are going to be a few things that you really need to consider to ensure that you’re going to be able to find the right type of plan. That’s why it’s  a matter of really thinking about your options, so that you can see whether or not your Medicare Advantage plans are going to provide comprehensive coverage or not.  Here are a few tips to finding the right types of plan for your medical needs:

1) Choosing amongst the type of care network your plan provides.

This is a really important part of figuring out the type of plan that you want to go with.  Amongst the lists of Medicare Advantage plans that are out there, you’re going to find that there are some specific options as to which sort of plan is going to be right for you.  One of the features you’re going to find most commonly is coverage network as dictated by HMO or PPO.

An HMO is a health maintenance organization, by which you have one primary care physician that all of your care will go through, and that will make many decisions as to which sort of tests or procedures are necessary.  With a PPO, instead of just one doctor that you have to visit, you actually have a network, so that you’re able to go to any hospital or doctor within that network and get insurance covered care.  HMOs are typically the cheapest and most affordable when everything is said and done, but PPOs offer by far the most freedom.

2) Which features do you need, and which can you live without?

Another thing that you want to really think about is which features and facets of a plan you really need, and which ones you can do without.  There are different tiers of Medicare Advantage plans, and one thing that you’re going to find is that not all provide for everything.  It’s important to choose a plan that provides for what you need, but that doesn’t provide too much coverage as more coverage costs more money.  Things like prescription drugs are not a worry for everyone right away, so they are a potential that you can think about cutting at any time, and other things of that nature.

3) Always look at state specific plan options.

Medicare Advantage plans are a relatively new concept, and they are regulated by the local states themselves.  That means the laws for what is available, what is covered, what services you can procure, etc, etc, is all dictated by where you live.  That’s why it’s really important you investigate what the standards are where you live, so that you can see what plans are even offered to you.

4) Weight payment options to consolidate the cost of your plan.

Another thing that you’re going to find is that there are a few costs associated with how a plan actually works, typically that’s the deductible and your premium.  The premium is what you own on a monthly basis to actually buy the type of coverage.  Your deductible refers to the amount you have to spend on care before insurance kicks in, as well as the co-pay deal you can get on doctor visits and hospitalization.

What you can decide with Medicare supplement plans, is that you have the option to choose a higher deductible for lower premiums, or you can pay higher premiums for a much lower deductible.  Of course, if you go the high deductible route, you can also open up a Health Savings Account to even out the differences, and provide for the costs that you’re going to incur when it comes to medical care.

While choosing the right Medicare Advantage plans and options is always a crowded minefield of confusing options that make little sense to anyone besides industry insiders, there are plenty of resources out there to help you.  One of the best, provided by the American Government itself, and you can find it at Medicare.gov.
